Why Strength Training is Important

When I go to the gym, I always make sure to hit the weights before focusing on cardio. I usually chuckle when I see the one or two other girls touching the weights and all of the other ones on the ellipticals just sweating away.

The reason I chuckle is because strength training is much more important than cardio and I if I was low on time I would make sure to lift weights rather than cardio.

The reason is that added muscle increases a person's resting metabolic rate. One pound of muscles burns 50 calories a day whereas one pound of fat only burns around two calories a day.

So when I see girls sweating away at the cardio machines trying to lose fat, I wonder what they would think if they just gained some muscle. They would burn more just breathing all day long which is way more efficient. Also, going onto a cardio machine after lifting helps to maximize fat burning potential.

I would always try to eat a diet high in protein to help maximize muscle gain. For me, protein bars are an easy way to get some added protein without needing to cook. I also recommend egg whites and protein shakes.

So ladies, next time you're in the gym, go lift some weights first. It will really help you in the long run.
