Triplet Grid
By Taylor Jensen
One of my favorite exercises in learning rudimental snare drum was learning the triplet grid. The triplet grid is composed of 9 bars in 4/4 time. The first section of the triplet grid is called the fours. The first bar is four triplets with an accent on the first partial, the second bar is four triplets with an accent on the second partial, and the third bar is four triplets with an accent on the third partial of the triplet. The next section is called the twos. It is basically the same as the fours but cut in half. So, two beats of triplets with an accent on the first partial, two beats with an accent on the second partial, and two beats with an accent on the third partial. This is then repeated once for a total of two times so that it ends up being the same length as the fours. The last section of the triplet grid is called the ones. One triplet with an accent on the first partial, one triplet with an accent on the second partial, and one triplet with an accent on the third partial. This is then repeated three more times for a total of four times. That in essence is the basic triplet grid. Now what really makes the triplet grid fun is all of the variations you can apply to it. You can try adding diddles on every accent, you can try playing flams on every accent, you can put diddles on the downbeats while moving the accent, you can put flams on the down beats while moving the accent. The list goes on forever. (Also think of cheeses, flam fives, and swiss triplets). Make sure to play triplet grid with a metronome to really make sure you are placing every note. Another fun twist is to try marking time to triplet grid. Once you get it it can be really fun. Using triplet grid to work on any rudiment will really help you to master it. Just think of any triplet rudiment and you can grid it. Have fun! |
