Sixteenth Note Grid
By Taylor Jensen
A fun exercise to play to improve your rudimental drummming is the sixteenth note grid. This grid is very similar to the Triplet Grid . The sixteenth note grid is 12 bars long. It is divided into three section, the fours, the twos and the ones. The first section, the fours, is four bars of sixteenth notes. The first bar has an accent on the downbeat of every sixteenth note, the second bar moves the accent over to the second partial of every sixteenth note, the third bar moves the accent to the third partial of every sixteenth note, and the fourth bar moves the accent over to the fourth partial. The second section, the twos, is simply the fours cut in half and then repeated. So the first two beats are sixteenth notes with an accent on the downbeats, the second two beats have an accent on the second partial, and so on. One time through the twos should add up to two bars, so simply repeat it to add up to four bars. The third section is the ones. This has one beat with an accent on the downbeat, one beat with an accent on the second partial, one beat with an accent on the third partial, and one beat with an accent on the fourth partial. This is repeated three more times for a total of four times. Practice playing the sixteenth note grid to a metronome. You can play it using straight sixteenth notes or paradiddles. The great thing about a grid is you can grid any rudiment with it. My favorite hybrid rudiment to grid witht the sixteenth note grid is the book report. Have fun! |
