Marching an Out of State Drum Corps
By Taylor Jensen
This summer I am hoping to march an acitivity called Drum Corps International. This organization is known as Marching Music's Major League. This activity can best be described as marching band on steroids. There is an age limit at 21 so anyone over 21 is not allowed to be a performer. Young people from all over the world leave home for two months all summer to participate in this activity. They perform at stadiums all over the United States with each day spent practicing and perfecting a 12 minute show. Most tours start with two weeks to a month of what is called all days where each day is spent practicing 12 hours a day. Then they start their national tour where they sleep either on charter buses or gym floors touring the country competing all over the United State. Through the past four years of drum corps I have performed at Mile High Stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium, the Georgia Dome, the Rose Bowl, and numerous other large stadiums across the United States. This summer is going to be a new experience for me as I am hoping to march in a higher placing out of state corps. Auditions start in December and there is camp one to two times a month so that means at least ten plane tickets for me. So for this summer experience I'm going to need to pay for 10 plane tickets, the tour fee of $2300.00, and spending money for on tour when I run out of neccessities such as shampoo. I'm tentatively looking at around $5500.00 just for me to march and perform in front of thousands of people. There is something wrong with our society if we charge young people thousands of dollars to learn valuable life lessons about commitment, team work, group dynamics, and dedication, when a movie star can get paid millions just to act. |

Sounds like a pretty cool experience. Have fun!
I was a member of the AmericanLegion Junior Drum and Bugle Corp when I was a teenager. I know the work and stress involved and I applaud you for your initiative. Well done and keep trying. Alvien
